How to Know if Your AC is Broken

Broken AC being Fixed

Has your air conditioner been giving you problems recently? Your air conditioner is a very complex machine that requires periodic inspection and cleaning. Maintenance of your air conditioner is imperative to prolong the life expectancy and prevent a broken ac.

This leaves homeowners wondering how to know if their ac is broken. Knowing the signs of a broken air conditioner is important because prolonging repairs may lead to additional repair costs, which nobody wants.

Here are signs to look for that indicate an AC is broken:

Frozen AC Unit

Most of us know someone who has had their ac unit freeze into a block of ice. If your air condition system has frozen it may be due to a dirty air filter, low refrigerant, or a failed blower motor. If this is the case, we recommend turning the system off and calling for AC repair.

Leaks

Every summer residents call their local HVAC company for air conditioning repair. Many times, they find that the ac system is low on refrigerant from year to year. Most leaks are small and can sometimes be repaired if searched for. Some leaks, over time, become larger and may present health risks. There are now options to add leak sealant to some systems.

AC Blowing Warm Air

If your air conditioner is blowing warm or hot air as opposed to cold, there is likely an issue with the compressor of the unit. The compressor helps push out the air cold, and if this unit is not working you will need to get it fixed to receive proper cooling in your home.

Abnormal Sounds & Smells

Your air conditioner should not be making unusual sounds or have an abnormal smell. These are clear indicators that your ac may be broken. Not only are unusual sounds and smells unpleasant to deal with, but they can be causing damage to your unit the longer your unit goes without repair.

AC Won’t Turn On

You may have to call a trusted local HVAC company for ac repair if your air conditioner won’t turn on at all. We recommend checking all breakers and switches because too many times we find that these are accidentally turned off. Some issues that will need professional attention are breakers that keep tripping, blown fuses, and broken and/or burnt wiring. Always call a licensed HVAC contractor when dealing with electrical issues
